NATIONAL MINORITY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL NAMES NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN, MR. JOSE TURKIENICZ, UPS CPO Mr. Jose Turkienicz has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors for the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). He was elected to a two-year term, beginning January 4th 2021, during a special Board of Directors meeting held in December.

“UPS has long been committed to supplier diversity and economic inclusion,” said Jose Turkienicz, UPS chief procurement, real estate and global business services officer. “In my new role as Board Chair of NMSDC, I look forward to supporting the organization in its mission to advance business opportunities for certified minority business enterprises (MBEs). I’ll provide strategic guidance about how to expand engagement with more corporations/certified MBEs, help demonstrate the value they bring to the table, and highlight the importance of capacity development and access to capital. Increasing the possibilities for MBEs will help them grow and flourish which is really the ultimate goal.”

Turkienicz joined UPS in 2017. As chief procurement, real estate and global business services officer, Jose leads more than 15,000 people in 220 countries and territories with responsibility for creating, driving and implementing the vision and strategy of UPS’s $25B+ third-party spend, 4,000+ real estate properties and the company’s Global Business Services which includes UPS’s Customer Service and its IT, financial and employee global shared services.

An expert in supply chain for Fortune 500 companies, Jose has more than 20 years of leadership experience around the world managing multiple aspects of P&L, with a track record of successfully transforming organizations to top-tier performance by fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture of continuous improvement while driving sustainability, innovation and improved productivity.

Prior to joining UPS, Jose held leadership and management positions for Aramark, Campbell Soup Company and Mars, Inc. Chartered in 1972, The National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) was stood up because of the civil rights movement in the late 1960s and continues to be the leading minority business development organization in the United States. NMSDC supports the economic sustainability of more than 12,000 certified minority business enterprises (MBEs) and advances minority business development by facilitating procurement opportunities between its certified MBEs and its network of approximately 450 Corporate Members. NMSDC’s Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native America businesses provides products and services in many industries. The NMSDC network includes a National Office in New York, 23 affiliate regional councils, five international partner organizations and the Business Consortium Fund (BCF) as its funding arm.

Council Announcement: A letter to our Manager of Operations

It was January of 2007 when I walked into the Council’s office for the first time. This was the first time I met Mayra as she greeted me with a warm smile and “Hello.” Since then, Mayra and I have been working side-by-side developing, building, and growing the Council.

Mayra began her career as a contract receptionist in 2006. Little did she know she was brought onto the team right before a holiday so that everyone else could take a long weekend off. Mayra was working solo by her third day, and was later hired full-time that fall.  In 2008, Mayra assumed the Certification Manager’s position and began mastering the process.  Mayra learned events management with a “can do” attitude.  Mayra moved on to take on a new challenge in 2013 as the Manager of Operations.  She has managed all back office operations, accounting, events, records management, etc.  One of her main duties was to become our Human Resources subject matter expert.  Mayra took courses, attended seminars, and received several certifications.  She has been invaluable in this role.  She accomplished all of this while raising her family.

While managing her job as Manager of Operations and taking care of her family, she attended the University of WA at night, studied during her lunch hour and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree two years later.  This was no easy feat, but she did it! Mayra has accomplished many things without sacrificing her commitment to the Council or her family.  Her smile has not waned one bit through all of this.

Recently, in light of both the economic and health pandemic, it has challenged everyone with varying levels of difficulty.  Mayra has elected not to allow this pandemic to dictate whether her children receive an excellent education.  She leaves the Council to become their teacher and insure her children grow, flourish, and succeed in life. We are proud of Mayra for taking the most difficult step in her life – to protect her children today and secure a safe journey into the future.

Mayra we will miss you tremendously, but know you are doing the right thing for the right reasons!  Best wishes and keep smiling!

The Northwest Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council has released the new dates for their 2020 premier events. Considering the global, national, and local health risks posed by the recent outbreak of COVID-19, the Northwest Mountain MSDC’s responsibility is, first and foremost, to support its Council Members, MBEs, and Community Partners. The Council has spent a significant amount of time thoughtfully assessing the current situation and have decided to go virtual for all 2020 events. Don’t forget to save the following dates:

Other options for help and assistance for small businesses are available from the local and federal government.

  • $5 Million in Small Grants from Governor’s Strategic Funds
    Up to $5 million of the Governor’s Strategic Reserve Funds will be made available as small grants to small businesses across the state to help prevent closure due to COVID-19. The state Department of Commerce will coordinate an application process.
  • City of Seattle Small Business Stabilization Fund
    Approximately $2.5 million is available for the City of Seattle Small Business Stabilization Fund, an emergency fund that provides working capital grants in amounts up to $10,000 to qualifying small businesses. Eligibility criteria and how to apply is here: seattle.gov/office-of-economic-development/small-business/small-business-programs-/stabilization-fund- Deadline to apply is March 25.

Washington State Paid Family & Medical Leave

Are you aware of the Washington State Paid Family & Medical Leave, authorized by the legislature in 2017? Premium collections by employers begin to process January 1, 2019. Employee wages and hours need to be tracked by employers to begin reporting April 1, 2019. Actual employee benefits will be available January 1, 2020. This applies to nearly all employers statewide regardless of size, including out-of-state employers with Washington employees.

Exceptions include:

  • Self-employed individuals (may opt in)
  • Federal Employees
  • Federally Recognized Tribes (may opt in)
  • Individuals who temporarily work in WA
