- I Just Recently Opened My Business. Am I Still Eligible to Apply for the MBE Certification?
Yes, you can still apply for MBE certification even if your business is new. You’ll need to submit two years of personal tax returns. - How Much Time Does It Take to Obtain MBE Certification?
The entire certification process typically takes around 60-90 business days, assuming all required documents are submitted and there are no issues with your application. - What If the Application Is Asking for a Document I Don’t Have?
If you come across a document request that you don’t have, there’s an N/A option available in the application. The NWMMSDC will most likely reach out to request something else in lieu of it or guide you in obtaining the right documents. - What Is the Recertification Process Like?
Recertification is an important annual step to maintain your MBE status. The process is straightforward: simply update your company’s revenue, taxes, and ownership and upload the recertification affidavit. Make sure to keep your financials up to date, as this will speed up the recertification process when the time comes. - Will I Receive a Certificate Once My Application Is Approved?
After your application is approved, you’ll be issued a serial number and a downloadable certificate. You can use this certificate as proof of your MBE status for contracts and business opportunities. - Is It Possible to Make Changes to My Application After I’ve Already Submitted It?
Yes, you can make updates throughout the application process. You can save your progress and come back to your application. If you realize that a document is missing or an error was made, you can revise your application before it’s finalized. This helps ensure that your submission is accurate and complete before certification approval. - How Do You Verify Ethnicity?
Ethnicity verification is a key part of the MBE certification process. You can verify your ethnicity through birth certificates, death certificates, or other federal documents where your ethnicity is clearly stated. Make sure that the documents you submit are clear and legible. - Is It Okay for Me to Certify with Other Organizations as Well?
Yes, you can be certified with other organizations in addition to the MBE certification. NWMMSDC focuses on certifying ethnic minority-owned businesses. For women-owned business certification, we recommend contacting the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). - How long is my certification valid, and when do I have to renew it?
Your MBE certification is valid for one year from the date of approval. You must renew annually by submitting updated documents and an affidavit confirming continued eligibility. You will automatically receive 90-, 60- and 30-days reminders to renew. - Who has access to my application?
Your application is strictly confidential and only accessible to NWMMSDC Certification Committee members and staff involved in the review process. We do not share your information without your consent. - Can I expedite my application?
Yes, we offer expedited service that is within 5 business days once the application is completed. Expedited services comes with an additional $800 cost on top of initial certification fees.
