Are you to level up your minority-owned business and apply for Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification? If you’re wondering whether you’re eligible or what the certification process looks like, you’re in the right place. The NWMMSDC has gathered some of your most frequently asked questions to help you navigate the certification process.

  1. I Just Recently Opened My Business. Am I Still Eligible to Apply for the MBE Certification?
Yes, you can still apply for MBE certification even if your business is new. You’ll need to submit two years of personal tax returns. This helps assess the legitimacy and stability of your business.

To learn more about certification eligibility, check out our last post on MBE application requirements here.

  2. How Much Time Does It Take to Obtain MBE Certification?
The entire certification process typically takes around 60-90 business days, assuming all required documents are submitted and there are no issues with your application. Keep in mind that delays can occur if additional information is needed, so it’s always a good idea to double-check your inbox and the application status.

  3. What If the Application Is Asking for a Document I Don’t Have?
If you come across a document request that you don’t have, there’s an N/A optionavailable in the application. The NWMMSDC will most likely reach out to request something else in lieu of it or guide you in obtaining the right documents.

  4. Will I Receive a Certificate Once My Application Is Approved?
After your application is approved, you’ll be issued a serial number and a downloadable certificate. You can use this certificate as proof of your MBE status for contracts and business opportunities.

  5. Is It Possible to Make Changes to My Application After I’ve Already Submitted It?
Yes, you can make updates throughout the application process. You can save your progress and come back to your application. If you realize that a document is missing or an error was made, you can revise your application before it’s finalized. This helps ensure that your submission is accurate and complete before certification approval.

  6. How Do You Verify Ethnicity?
Ethnicity verification is a key part of the MBE certification process. You can verify your ethnicity through birth certificates, death certificates, or other federal documents where your ethnicity is clearly stated. Make sure that the documents you submit are clear and legible.

  7. Is It Okay for Me to Certify with Other Organizations as Well?
Yes, you can be certified with other organizations in addition to the MBE certification. Many business owners choose to pursue multiple certifications to increase their visibility and access to a wider range of opportunities. Just be sure that you maintain all certifications in good standing.

  8. How much does certification cost?
Certification fees vary depending on your company’s annual revenue. A full breakdown of costs is available on our certification page.

  9. Does NWMMSDC certify women-owned businesses?
The NWMMSDC focuses on certifying ethnic minority-owned businesses. Of course, ethnic minority-owned businesses can be women-owned. For a women-owned business certification only, we recommend contacting the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).

  10. How long is my certification valid, and when do I have to renew it?
Your MBE certification is valid for one year from the date of approval. The recertification process is simple: You must renew annually by submitting updated documents and an affidavit confirming continued eligibility. You will automatically receive 90-, 60- and 30-days reminders to renew.

  11. Who has access to my application?
Your application is strictly confidential and only accessible to NWMMSDC Certification Committee members and staff involved in the review process. We do not share your information without your consent.

  12. Can I expedite my application?
Yes, we offer expedited service that is within 5 business days once the application is completed. Expedited service comes with an additional $800 cost on top of initial certification fees.

Obtaining MBE certification can be a game-changer for your business by opening the doors to a variety of networking, development, and business opportunities.
